Frequently Asked Claims Questions
What happens when you call Safeway to report an incident or accident and file a claim?
Good question.
Here's the answer from the claims experts at Safeway Insurance.
You report the incident or accident and file a claim. Call the "in case of accident" telephone number on your insurance card. We gather all information about the incident or accident from you. Within hours we assign your claim to a Claims Representative who keeps the process moving.
Arrange to get your vehicle to a repair shop. If your vehicle isn't already at a repair facility, have it towed or driven to one.
We inspect your vehicle and prepare a written estimate of what the repairs will cost. If the damage is so severe that the cost of repairs exceeds the vehicle's fair market value, it will be considered a "total loss." If that's the case, we ask for your permission to tow the car to a secure storage site and begin processing a settlement.
We pay for a rental car if you have that coverage (not available in all states). We review and explain how much per day and for how long we pay the rental fees.
You get your repaired vehicle back…or you get a check. Our goal is settle your claim, so your vehicle is repaired or you are paid for a total loss, as quickly as possible.
We handle any liability investigation. If another vehicle was involved, or someone was hurt, we contact you within 48 hours after you report the accident. In our investigation, we review all liability claims made by others – including accident reports, police reports, witness statements, etc. – in order to be as thorough as possible.
How long will repairs take?
A quality job might take a bit longer than you think. Your estimate will show the number of work hours required to repair your vehicle. But don't forget that parts need to be ordered and delivered. Things like that usually require a little time. We ask that you be patient. We, too, want you to get your vehicle repaired and back in service as quickly as possible.
What if more damage is discovered?
It often happens that once repair work has begun, hidden damage appears. If that happens, your Adjuster will be notified to approve the additional work. This is one reason why repairs can take a bit longer than originally estimated.
Who do I call if I have questions?
The key person to call is your Adjuster. So keep his or her phone number and your claim number handy.
How does a deductible work?
The "deductible" is the amount you'll have to pay in order to have your vehicle repaired or replaced. You select that amount when you purchase your insurance. For example, if you have a $500 deductible, and the cost of repairs is $2500…then the first $500 is paid by you and the remaining $2000 is paid by us.
